Gigoia Island, Rio de Janeiro

Many still do not know that a lagoon complex exists in the middle of Barra da Tijuca, where the fauna and flora of our Pantanal Carioca is preserved. This nature refuge, in the heart of the metropolitan center, enchants everyone who passes by and appreciates the interior climate.

The lake on Gigóia Island, with its landscapes and views of Pedra da Gávea and Cristo Redentor, is known as Venezuela Carioca and takes tourists on boat tours through the archipelago to meet or find the crystalline waters of Praia dos Amores on Barra da Tijuca.

With two natural charms, Ilha da Gigóia also offers a cultural tour inside the island with a tourist guide, learning about local history and best points.

You will find shops and different lodging options with the best custo-benefit, near the Jardim Oceânico, in Barra da Tijuca.

The restaurants facing the lake and the hectic nights with live music end the week as a meeting point for locals and tourists who take advantage of the exuberant nature.

One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, or Christ the Redeemer, is an art deco statue depicting Jesus Christ. It was almost entirely built in Brazil, except for the heads and the others that were molded in France and drawn for here.

Symbol of Christianity, or Christ the Redeemer, it also became a cultural icon of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Latin America as a whole. The idea of building a monument not high on the Corcovado hill, 709 meters above sea level, began in 1859, like the French father Pedro Maria Boss, but the project came to fruition only in 1922 in commemoration of the centenary of the Independence of Brazil. It was inaugurated on October 12, 1931.

With a panoramic and privileged view of a large part of Rio de Janeiro, from the path along the Paineiras, it is one of the two main cartões-postais of the city. The Tijuca Forest, where Christ the Redeemer is located, is not only the most visited in the country, but also the largest urban forest in the world, becoming not only a carioca icon but also a national one.

The objective of the work is to transport water from the source of the Carioca River along Largo da Carioca to supply the city and serve as a means of water transportation for three centuries, directly contributing to the development of Rio de Janeiro. Before, transportation of water was done by half of buckets using handicraft work.

The Arches of Lapa are considered the largest architectural work undertaken in Brazil during the colonial period, as well as being the most representative symbol of the Ancient River preserved in the Bohemian region of Lapa.

Passou to transport passageirs by the middle of the Santa Teresa bond that also passes over the Arcos and connects the Largo da Carioca to Santa Teresa. Currently, the bond is more of a tourist attraction than a transportation for the residents, passing over two of the most important show houses in the city: the Fundição Progresso and Circo Voador .

quinta da boa vista rio de janeiro

A true city property, Quinta da Boa Vista is one of the two largest urban parks in only Rio de Janeiro, with nearly 155 thousand square meters. Located on the side of São Cristóvão, in two of the most traditional traditions of Rio, the gardens created by the French landscaper Auguste Glaziou have been preserved.

The Palácio was used as a residence for the Portuguese royal family, starting in 1808, in connection with the episode made as a transfer from the Portuguese court to Brazil (1808-1822).

During the Empire of Brazil (1822-1889) it was used as a residence for the Brazilian imperial family, since the proclamation of independence of Brazil (1822) by Dom Pedro de Alcântara de Bragança, Royal Prince of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves and, later, the first emperor of Brazil as Dom Pedro I.

It sheltered for many years the Jardim Zoológico do Rio, founded in 1888, which encompassed its activities recently giving rise to the Bioparque, a new zoo concept.

The park also houses the National Museum which, considered the oldest scientific institution in Brazil, undergoes a meticulous reconstruction after being destroyed by a fire.

Surrounded by greenery, its gardens are a treat for picnics, a favorite program among locals and tourists visiting the local area. There are also several multi-sports squares, which attract many young people. The walk through the artificial caves is unmissable, as well as a pedal line or caiaque in the lakes of the park that opens daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free and close to the São Cristóvão train and metro stations.

Lage Park

Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro

With about 52 hectares, Parque Lage is part of the Tijuca National Park and is one of the two most sought-after ecological refuges in Rio de Janeiro.

In 1811, Rodrigo de Freitas Mello and Castro took over this old farm on the banks of the Lagoa. In 1840, the premises were all reproduced by the English landscape painter John Tyndale, who was inspired by the romantic parks of his native land. Nine years later, Antônio Martins Lage bought ownership of the premises and it was renamed Parque dos Lage. His wife, the Italian lyrical singer Gabriela Bezanzoni, was a great host: she organized magnificent parties in which we included the most prominent representatives of Rio society.

The Parque Lage was a sugar mill during colonial Brazil and only in 1957 it became public and was recognized as Cultural, Environmental and Landscape Heritage of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

The park has a palace, a swimming pool, caves, aquariums, a green area with bucolic gardens where you can walk to the books, chafarizes, children's parking, artificial islands, aquariums in some walls, a restaurant and the same caves, grottoes and some trails. The most famous is Trilha do Corcovado, which will take you to Christ the Redeemer after about 3 hours of moderate walking.

There are two best points for you to see Christ the Redeemer inside the palace, where the local architecture meets the mountains and the terrace, located above the palace.

Other than that, it is imperative that you do in the park and visit the Prédio da Cavalariça, the Lavanderia dos Escravos and the Plage Café . All refreshments are served by the pool, free of charge.

Currently, the palace operates as Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, created in 1975 by the Department of Culture of the Secretary of State for Education.

Botanical Garden

botanical garden rio de janeiro

Founded in 1808 by D. João, then Prince Regent of Portugal, the Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro is famous for the exuberance and importance of its plant collections, as well as for the beauty of its landscapes.

Its bicentenary history is expressed in its monuments, buildings and works of art. The institution houses monuments of historical, artistic and archaeological value and a more complete library of the country specialized in botany.

One of the most beautiful and well-preserved green areas of the city is an example of the diversity of Brazilian and foreign flora. About 6,500 species (some threatened with extinction) can be observed, distributed over an area of 54 hectares, in the open air and in stoves.

Visitors can ride on an electric cart along the streets and see plants from different countries, see the stoves (Orchids, Bromelias, Samambaias and Insetivorous Plants) and the themed gardens and collections, such as the Japanese Garden, created in 1935 from a collection of 65 examples of typical Japanese plants.
